Real stones and handmade pieces last for years with a little care. Here’s how to keep yours looking the way it did when it arrived.
Every day
- Put your jewellery on last — after perfume, hairspray and moisturiser.
- Take it off before swimming, showering, washing up or exercising.
- Keep it away from cleaning products and chlorine.
Storing your pieces
- Store each piece separately, in its box or a soft pouch, so harder stones don’t scratch softer ones.
- Fasten chains before putting them away to stop them tangling.
- Somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight is best — strong light can fade some stones over time.
Cleaning
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals.
- Metal parts can darken over time; a jewellery polishing cloth brings them back.
Softer and porous stones
Some stones — turquoise, opal, malachite, fuchsite and pearl among them — are soft or porous and don’t like water, oils or knocks. Wipe them with a dry cloth only, and make them the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
