The stone of calm and clarity
February's birthstone is a violet variety of quartz, coloured by traces of iron and natural radiation in the earth. Shades run from soft lilac to a deep, reddish purple. Prolonged strong sunlight can fade it, so keep it out of sunny windowsills.
The ancient Greeks believed amethyst kept its wearer clear-headed; it remains a stone of calm, intuition and balance.
Hard-wearing and happy with everyday wear. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush, rinse and pat dry. Store apart from softer stones, which it can scratch.
